Since I received a task to be done in SDL Trados Studio 2009 by Monday, I wanted to install the 30 day free trial version of Studio by downloading Studio 2009 and going through the installation procedure. However, when I got to the activation stage, a dialog appeared saying that the trial has expired and I was offered two options: either buy the product or activate it using a license key. Beforehand, I had never installed any versions of Studio, therefore, I could not understand why the trial could have expired. I logged into my SDL account to see that actually I own a license key for SDL Trados Studio Starter which is valid for 90 days. I entered the activation code in the activation dialog and when I clicked Next for validation, I received the following error: Could not contact activation server (Error code 50040) When checking my licenses in my SDL account, I was startled to see that my license for the Starter version was already in use, but no matter how hard I tried to start the application from the Start menu, I was always given the activation dialog again with the two options: either buy the software or activate it with an activation code.
